Success Stories

A man in his 30’s was installing a set of gates when he was caught between a moving lorry and a wall. His chest and back were severely crushed and he was not expected to work again. He was understandably traumatised and had not received help from the NHS for this. He was severely depressed, was experiencing flashbacks of the accident and suffering a lot of pain. He was referred to Kynixa almost 2 1/2 years after the accident. During 12 months of case management, Kynixa organised over 25 sessions of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and referred him to a Pain Management Programme. Kynixa helped him to return to part-time work as a welder. A few months later he called his case manager to say he was now fulltime with another company, had a new girlfriend and was very happy and grateful!
A mother was driving her two daughters, aged 8 and 11, to their child minder’s house when the vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. The mother sustained minor injuries but the two girls were seriously injured. When the family was referred to Kynixa, one of the girls was severely disabled and required a wheelchair for the majority of her waking hours. Her sister had recovered well from her injuries but was experiencing post traumatic shock. The case manager called them twice a week for the first six months of the rehabilitation programme and recommendations were made to find accommodation that better suited the needs of the family. The case manager helped to research suitable housing for the family as well as organising therapy, individual and family counselling. Adaptations to the house were also made to assist the youngest girl to achieve independence with her daily activities e.g. assistive device to get in and out of the bath, staircase lift, etc. The case manager also liaised with the school to make sure all needs were met. The family love their new home and the youngest girl is now able to walk short distances without assistance.
A 41 year old labourer’s life was suddenly turned upside down as the result of a traumatic motorbike accident. Before his accident he was a health conscious body builder and his occupation, which involved working on road and highway construction projects, was physically demanding.
He sustained multiple injuries including the loss of his lower left leg, fractured pelvis, injury to his right foot and leg as well as multiple internal injuries. The accident impacted every area of his life – socially, physically and mentally. For two years he was unable to work due to ongoing pain from the injuries. He became anxious about his future and his relationship started to suffer; he gained weight and his self esteem plummeted.
Just when he thought all hope was lost of having a normal quality of life, Kynixa was asked to perform an Immediate Needs Assessment. Kynixa organised a new prosthetic leg, home adaptations, driving assessment and a suitable car with appropriate adaptations. His case manager set up a gym membership to improve strength and mobility, assist weight loss and improve self image. Sessions of physiotherapy, psychological and marital therapy were also included into his rehabilitation programme.
Once the labourer was improving physically and mentally, a Vocational Assessment was completed. Following this, his case manager identified suitable courses to retrain him for a return to work within the construction industry.
6 months after the case was discharged, he contacted his Kynixa case manager to say that he was working 60 hours per week driving fork lift trucks for a company he had previously worked for and had just been nominated ‘employee of the month’!
